If You Wanna Know

Houston is considered one of the cities with the most polluted air in the United States. The American Lung Association ranks it sixth after several cities and towns in California and Nevada, including Los Angeles. It specifies Houston as being #7 in Ozone Pollution, and #16 in Year-round particle pollution. This is not to say that all of the particle pollution originates from industrial and/or human-made sources, but The Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts has created an index of the top 100 air polluting corporations in the US called the Toxic 100 Index.

Below you will find a table I created using the top six polluters based on PERI's scoring system (not shown) as applied to the Houston area (within a 30-mile radius of the center of Houston). It also shows the names and addresses of their facilities in the area, as well as the chemicals dealt with and released at each location. While the quantity of chemicals released has been derived from the PERI Index, the total combined quantity for each location is a combined total of all chemicals listed in the "Chemicals Released In Air" column. Specific quantities of chemicals released can be found at the PERI website.
